According to an ancient story, the church was built after St. Francis’s preaching which took place in Pisa around 1211; in fact, two of his Pisan followers, Agnello and Alberto, erected the first Franciscan building. The architectonic structure of the church reflects the typical Franciscan style: simple lines, poor materials, but vast sizes (18 m x 70 m).
Noteworthy is the bell tower without supporting columns, which does not rest on the ground, but on the two sides of the nave and is supported by two big stone shelves. A part of the church became a civic museum in 1899 and is now a school, while the inner cloister is used by the parishioners. The building houses 17th-century paintings and original glass doors.

Chiesa parrocchiale di San Donato, Terricciola - Pisa in Toscana
Sorge nella parte più alta del paese, preceduta da una doppia rampa e da una scalinata; la facciata si presenta con i rifacimenti ottocenteschi che modificarono l’aspetto medievale dell’edificio. L’interno, a croce latina, è diviso in tre navate da robusti pilastri e le superfici sono sottolineate da cornici e paraste in muratura, secondo il gusto neoclassico di metà Ottocento.
In controfacciata, è presente la settecentesca “Madonna con Bambino e santi” attribuita a Anton Domenico Bamberini. Particolare, per la ricchezza delle decorazioni, è la cappella del Santissimo Sacramento in cui è esposta la seicentesca “Flagellazione di Cristo”. Il fonte battesimale fu realizzato nel 1807. In sagrestia si conserva una “Madonna con Bambino”, su tavola, datata al 1409.
