General Information
Villa Campestri is a magnificent Renaissance Villa completely restored in the Tuscany country side just 35 km North of Florence. Our hotel stands at 450 m above sea level in a park of 140 hectares. We have 22 rooms with a total of 55 beds.
All the rooms have private bathroom, minibar, telephone, tv satellite, hair-drier, heating. From our swimming-pool one can admire the beauty of the Mugello Valley. The restaurant is open both for lunch time (when a light lunch such as bruschette, pasta, salad is availaible) and for dinner (when we offer courses typical of the area).
Everything is home made and we pick fresh vegetables every day from our owned kitchen garden.
During the months of March, April, October and November we organise walks and art tours as well as cookery lessons and tastings of olive oil.
The oldest part of Villa Campestri dates back to the 13th century. Since then it was the property of the Roti Michelozzi family who owned it for 700 years, until 1989. Many writings confirm that in 1380 the Roti Michelozzi family commissioned Lorenzo Bicci (Giotto's pupil) to paint in fresco the tabernacle, which is still situated at the entrance of the Villa. During this period the little chapel (still consecrated) was created inside the Villa.
In the centuries that followed the Villa was modified and enlarged many times in order to meet the new requirements of its owners. Important restoration works were undertaken in the XVth and XVIIth centuries, giving the Villa its Renaissance ambience.
Original wooden-ceilings, terracotta floors, stone door frames complete the Renaissance spirit of the house.
At the beginning of the XXth century the local master Galileo Chini decorated the interior parts of the Villa with magnificent window and wall-decorations in "Liberty style", which can be still admired. The last restoration, from the 1989 to the 1991, preserved the charm of the old Villa.
The original structures have been carefully mantained.
The Villa stands on a hill far from the noise and the traffic of the city. The Mugello valley offers many opportunities to people who love nature and culture. The remains of a marvellous medician fortress can be seen at San Piero a Sieve, a small villagge 10 Km from Villa Campestri. The fortress stands high on a hill and commands wonderful views of the valley.
Medician palaces are spread all over the Mugello Valley as the area was the birthplace of Cosimo il Vecchio, the founder of the Family. During their long rule, from the XIIth to the XVIIIth century, the Medici always remembered this green land and left their traces everywhere. There are many summer residences, fortifications, palaces and towers.
The Mugello valley is also the home of two artists famous all over the world for their influence over renaissance painting: Giotto and Beato Angelico. 5 Km from Villa Campestri, near a small town called Vicchio, you can visit the houses where they were born and the places where they took the first steps in developing their very special style of painting.
The school of Barbiana, where Don Milani taught and was buried, is located close to Vicchio. Numerous monasteries and Romanesque churches appear in the hills: Bosco ai Frati, Badia di Moscheta, Pieve di Sant'Agata, Madonna dei Tre Fiumi, to mention only a few.
In short, Villa Campestri offers its guests not only a lovely stay in an elegant and beautiful place, but also different and touching experiences that you won't forget.
